Mission Impossible 3, What a wonderful way to start the summer movie season. Big Bangs, and the best villian in Phillip Seymour Hoffman, that Hollywood has had in a while. He’s really just too cool, to be so utterly evil. The movie doesn’t slow down long enough for you to go hey wait what’s happening and it works by keeping it fresh, and just a little hollywood lightness at the end is the only negative I can see in it. After the crap that was M-I-2 I had no desire to see this movie, but I am glad that I did. JJ Abrams uses all the right pieces from the television show, the team dynamic, the spy theme, and the MUSIC! I can’t wait to see what Abrams does with Star Trek. Here’s to the summer blockbusters. They just started with a bang.

Summer Movie Season is Here! May,
O.k, So the summer movie doldrums kick off tommorow with Mission Impossible 3. It’s funny about a month ago I thought I wouldn’t touch this film with a ten foot pole but now with the JJ Abrams star trek anouncement, my need for a good action flick and all the praise Phillip Seymour Hoffman is receiving as the villian, I think I will go see this matinee style. Let the summer begin!
The next weeks winner may not pass Mission Impossible 3, and may not even break the box offices top 5. Poisedon comes out May 12th and looks to be the last movie for all involved. Kurt Russell should probably just hang it up. This is like a collection of B-list actors symbolizing the ship their sinking on isn’t this movie, it’s their agents job. Stay Away!
On May 19th is the Da Vinci Code. Millions will go, Millions will complain how the book was better, which really just takes all the fun out of it. Since I didn’t read the book I’ll just make fun of Tom Hanks haircut and stare at Audrey Tatou.
One week Later it’s time for the X-men. I still cringe that everything that was great about the first two movies has been missed here by Fox in an effort to beat Superman to the theatres. I hope to god Im wrong. In the past I could be so excited for this movie, now Im just scared.
and my May pick for movie that will be good but noone will see is
Art School Confidential. Terry Zwigoff(Ghost World) adapts another comic by Daniel CLowes (Ghost World). It has the right people in place, question is can Zwigoff breathe a full movie into a very small strip.
Wow. What movie’s are you excited about this summer?
V for Vendetta
So I’ll start posting about Vegas next blog, promise but just wanted to say I just got out of V for Vendetta and liked it very much. It does follow the graphic novel pretty closely with some hollywood interepretation thrown in but it works very well as a full piece. Hugo Weaving does a great job with his body language making V a wonderful characther and Natalie Portman is very good as Evey Hammond. Her ‘torture’ scenes are very well acted and actually sad. Thematically the film raises the same warnings as 1984, and other Owrellian prophecies, yet it resonates more so in this Bush controlled world. Very well done, and I commend Warner Brothers for not cutting this movie in fear of politics. Bravo!
oScars?
Found this over at newsarama. If you read comics, especially marvel comics, you know this is funny. If you don’t im sure it’s just poor taste on my part.

brokeback mountain/ belle and sebastian
Belle And Sebastian, The Life Pursuit. Ok first i need to admit I’ve never been a big fan, but Dear Catastrophe Waitress grew on me after some time and when i saw them live I really began to enjoy that cd even more. So I picked up this new album for jess yesterday and not completely for her. I was expecting too much, I guess as after two full listens, nothing jumps out at me. It’s nice, It’s Poppy, but mostly it feels empty. And that’s strange because it also seems very crowded, as there are instruments going off everywhere on this cd. I’m sure you diehard Belle and Sebastian fans will be very pleased with this, but for me it gets a B- Not bad, but it mostly induces flatness inside.
Brokeback Mountain. So i finally saw it. Most likely the Oscar winner for Heath Ledger and for Best Picture. The true oscar should go to Ang Lee who does this movie a very sincere justice and never strays from the intent to make this a love story set against a western America, that is at once beautiful and also very dark and lonely. I got to admit, it wasn’t as powerful or as good as I hoped or was led to believe, but I think in the long run that works in the movies favor, much like Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm, there’s a certain film that captures you by being still and maybe just a little less overdone. It gets an A+ I say give Ang Lee the Oscar for director, and Heath Ledger for Acting, but I’m not sold entirely on the film being the best this year.
I’ve got a soft spot for Terrence Howard and Hustle and Flow for that one. That movie’s subject matter may prove more risky for hollywood to give any awards to. Can they award an Actor or a film whose main player is a pimp from Memphis? Either way can’t wait to hear fox news bash hollywood when the Oscars are handed out.
Well actually I wouldn’t mind if i never see fox news again. Ever.
sweeney todd
attended the play Sweeney Todd at Cornell University last night. Never knew we made musicals like that. It’s a dark tormented play that feels far moodier than anything i’ve ever seen at the theatre and it’s a musical, which i usually hate. But i enjoyed sweeney todd very much. The cast and crew at Cornell did a remarkable job and I left very happy. The only sad thing is, I have Jersey Girl to thank for making me want to see this play. Yeah.

The New World
Emmett Louis Till
Went to see this Documentary “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till” last night at the Bijou last night. If your like me and were born after the civil rights movement, you need to go and see this film. It can pretty much sum up every feeling of cruelty and hate and unreasonable bigotry that existed during that time of our countries history. It shows a justice system that doesnt work, much like our current one in relation to suspected ‘terrorists’. It’s scary actually at the world we could have been born into. We have lot’s of work left to do where equality and human rights go, in fact at one point while they were using a CNN clip about Emmett Till you can see the headline about the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal scroll across the screen. This film should be seen if for nothing else to remind us that there is unfounded hatred in this world and people are mistreated every day. You will feel sad, ashamed, and sorry for the human race. and that’s o.k.
sometimes we should be reminded of who we are and what we’ve done.
munich
Wow. This is a good, no a great movie. It’s tight, it entertains and it raises issues that should be raised every day in the world we now live in. Where has this Spielberg been hiding? He’s released so much popcorn crap lately I didn’t know he had a movie of this caliber left in him. It’s a tragic and yet beautiful film about vengenance and the consequences of going down that path and spiralling out of control. I was truly impressed. Welcome back Steven, now just don’t make any more movies with Tom Cruise and you’ll be o.k. in my book.
