Black Snake Moan. It’s good.

Black Snake Moan is good. It just feels right and so southern it’s giving me nightmares of my time in tennessee where we lived on the border of Missisippi. I really like Craig Brewer’s style. I liked it in Hustle and Flow and I like it here. Samuel L. Jackson gives his best performance since Unbreakable and moves the picture along all by himself. If your looking for a good movie that doesn’t follow all the rules of good movies, this picture is very very unique. So two straight win’s for Brewer in my book, I look forward to a long career from him.

March Movie Picks!

Black Snake Moan, In theatres today. Craig Brewer’s follow up to Hustle and Flow (one of my top five movie picks of 05) feature’s Samuel L Jackson who finds a beat up Christina Ricci on the side of the road, and decides to save her, by chaining her to his couch. The trailer for this has all that southern vibe that Brewer had in Hustle and Flow and it also has that kinda off kilter Tarantino feel. This will be the only drama for the month.

MArch 9th 300. oh heck yeah. this looks like a freaking cartoon and I’m sure this will be more of a guys flick, but if it feels like summer movie season in march im fine with it. I am ready to have this movie be as good as I hope.

MAcrh 2oth. TMNT. oh turtles. you came back. the question is are you any good? I hope so because kids today could use some fun on the big screen, and a movie without Dakota Fanning.

Star Trek XI is go!

O.k. Star Trek Eleven has officially been announced by Paramount for a Christmas 2008 release. It could be the best christmas present ever or the worse blow to my most embarrising favorite show. J.J. Abrams is definetly directing and IGN is now saying that Matt Damon is indeed deep in negotiations to play KIrk, Adrien Brody as Spock and Gary SInise as Mckoy. They also claim James Mcavoy(Last King of Scotland) may play Scotty and Daniel Dae Kim (Lost and Enterprise) is a possibilty for Sulu. I’d be surprised if they get all these actors but if they do then a reboot may indeed be neccesary. That’s some serious star power and you got to believe this will be a bigger budgeted Star Trek than we have ever seen before.
Fingers crossed. If this thing bombs, well that will be it for the franchise for a long long time. If it succeeds expect a new show of some sort(maybe animated) and then watch CBS exploit the name until it grows stale again and we need another rebooting. Fingers Crossed.

More ATHF

Heck while were on the subject here’s the trailer for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters( actual title) Early screenings have been mostly negative but who cares? Aqua Teen is one of the best things Adult Swim has had and now with the added controversy I wouldn’t be surprised if this movie actually makes money and considering the budget that shouldn’t be that hard to do. Enjoy the trailer. In all its Lens Flare cheap photoshop glory.

3 for feb!

So here’s my valentines month movie previews. There is actually a whole lot of movies coming out in Feb and march( more so than usual) and some actual omg movies as well(300 I’m counting on you) but for feburary only 3 really stand out for me.
Breach comes out Feb 16th and one actor has sold me on it. Chris Cooper is just so good, has been since American Beauty. I can get over the fact that Ryan Phillipe is in it because of this. And hey its a thriller in winter. Why not?

This is the other movie on feb 16th and I admit it probably will be pretty bad. But when you have a discussion on what kind of superheroes you could pull off five years ago Ghost Rider wasn’t one of them. The technology has come so far, I hope this isn’t all razzle Dazzle, cause If a flaming skull on a bike doesn’t work then you can throw out all the other blist heroes chances of a silver screen appearance.

Then on the 23rd is Craig Brewers follow up to HUstle and Flow. Black Snake Moan stars samuel l jackson and christinia Ricci. and well this is the movie alot of critics said should have been released in time for the oscars. O.k. What are you going to see in febuary?

Pan’s Labyrinth. A horror/fairytale movie for adults.

Guillermo Del Toro latest film is dark, harsh, and yet still has a sense of make believe that you can get only on film. It looks like he kept his crew together from Hellboy as the make up is still top notch and the overall look of the film matches the previous one in style and lighting. This is the kind of genre movie that needs to be made more of. It’s serious, and it takes itself and it’s creatures seriously. Wonderful performances all around and like any good fairy tale it follows it’s path.
A.
Doug Jones has created a niche for himself as our creature actor(abe sapien, silver surfer) and this friend below. The Pale Man has one of the best five minutes of creature feature since Godzilla first arrived. He’s scary.

first snow ruminations

we got our first real storm here over the night. I really hate driving in this stuff. I’m just not able to not squeeze the steering wheel so tight that my hand starts to hurt. I saw 7 PS3’s in Target today. that’s funny. Ended up getting a Insignia 27″ lcd. its very pretty and bright. Ice hockey is blinding on it. Been watching some recently on dvd movies. Praire Home Companion and Mirror Mask. The former is o.k. but not great, the latter is a visual treat, but has that very Gaiamesque quality that you either like or hate. Got Miami Vice to watch in the snowstorm. I’ve been listening to Sleater Kinney lately. Where have all the good female fronted bands gone? In a moment i will be bundling up and going out for a snow lunch. maybe chinese?

Children of Men, Alfonso Curaon’s latest is tight.

Just got back from seeing Children of Men a dark and not distant at all future, where people stopped having babies. The Human race went infertile. Meanwhile the world continued to go to hell as we are currently and countries like Great Britain shut their borders and started hunting down illegal aliens and detaining them in refugee camps. This isn’t so far off that it’s science fiction and it makes a nice backdrop for this piece which is really a well done action movie about a quest to save the worlds first baby in 20 some years. A nice thrill ride and a film that stands on it’s own in style.
I give the movie an A and it should do well in the normally bleak January.

On another note I get the feeling the director has played Gears of War. Unfortanetly i couldn’t find a shot of the refugee camp online and the battle scenes that take place there but compare the color scheme and explosions of the two shots below. When the bullets start flying at the end of the movie and Clive Owen is ducking for cover anywhere he can, I just kept seeing Gears of War, and I haven’t even played the thing yet. We are almost to the point where film is borrowing more from games then games from film. still about ten years off but were almost there. And then the question will be who raises the bar first. Cinema or the Games industry?
