city on film.

Just got back from seeing City On FIlm aka Bob Nanna(hey mercedes, BRAID) perform. His solo set was nice and peaceful and just what this icy midwestern night needed. I’ve always been drawn to his lyrics and the way they have a beat of there own. Bought his record and look forward to it turning over and over on my record player. Very Enjoyable. Even played an old braid song acoustic. lovely.

hear me sing!

my old band exercises in breathing now has a page up on myspace right here be our friend if you wish and please download stewies car. it was our hit, we knew it and yeah it’s cuter than bugs on a windshield and now thanks to the internet, it’s free, silly and not a 5 year old song. Have to thank my friend Daris for uploading it for me as I couldn’t get it to work. anyway please if you’ve got pictures of us, remember the names of bands we played with I forgot to list, or just remember sitting in a dirty house or bar with us, please leave a comment. Memories are all we have, and i remember them better when you remind me.

fever fingers
deadly deals,
double or nothing.
negative thoughts on an open plain,
i wish there was a tree here.
i would climb it,
branch by branch,
just to see what
the air smells like up there,
where giants lay their heads.

from one enchilada to an amazing burrito.

in years we past, state to state
region to region, intertwined,
following each step with renewed vigor,
our hearts together, our feet in reach,
no matter our faults, they are overcome
as long as we wake up together.
it’s been a beautiful five years,
let’s go for fifty.
i’ve got the energy and the time.
can’t think of a better way to use them.

gods.

So the hotel was packed this year. Seemed everyone was there. Athena was hanging all over Loki, which must have infuriated Zeus, but oh well, what do they say about bad boys? The drinking was led by the norse kings again and over and under the tables the demons hovered. The card game was going rather smoothly. Apollo was winning but everyone at the table was waiting for Crounus to come around and start playing. Hercules was already in negotiations with the hotel staff for more food, but the manager was actually standing up to the brute. Diana laughed at that, happy that someone told Hercules no. She was swarmed by her female entourage as usual and all the male gods had long given up on attaining her hand. Boreas sat huddled in the corner and Auroura had her cloak pulled tight. Many parties had ended early when she let he light shine in. And of course in the middle of the room sat Volupia her crowd swarming. And on the typewriter was Clio recording it all. And me, I just watched it all. The gods and their set rotation.

On a road in Iowa.

We drove out to this little town west liberty, ia in the middle of nowhere. You could smell the cows as you ziped through the cornfields on the little two lane highway. Arriving on main street usa it was nice to see our destination, the new strand theatre, all lit up in neon, where electricity shouldn’t even exist. This town with it’s two little streets has a life, a pulse, that many similar towns abandonded long ago. There is a downtown grocery store, a chinese restaurant and a spanish fish resturaunt. We ate a cookie at the Mexican Bakery, next to a puppet theatre. It was only fifty cents and very good. The movie we came to see, wallace and gromit was only 3.50 and popcorn and soda a total of 2.35. It was a step back in time. The wide brick streets, undisturbed by the massive SUV’s that crowd our cities. As we were waiting for the movie to begin I thought about the owners of the theatre and how they must love what they do. They can’t possibly be making money out there, but they are making dreams. And not just theirs. I can’t imagine the kid, growing up in such an isolated place, having the joy of a new movie every week, all in walking distance of his house. It’s unheard of in this day of highways and empty downtowns. This must be what America is supposed to be. But was it ever really? Were we ever this content?
